Chuchuhuasi is a huge rainforest tree that can reach 30 meters in height and grows in tropical areas of rain forest in Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. Were given several names for this species and all refer to the same tree.

Chuchuhuasi hosts the most powerful features such as phyto triterpene, favonoli and sesquiterpeni alkaloids. Two of the most popular items in chuchuhuasi are two alkaloids, which have been already documented in the 60's antitumor activity, although not present in sufficient quantities to have real therapeutic action against cancer.

The long history of use of chuchuhuasi has fueled great interest in the scientific community. In the 60s, an American pharmaceutical company discovered a powerful immunostimulant properties located in the extract of leaves and bark, documenting that increased phagocytosis (the ability of immune cells to attack bacteria and cells unknown). Searches of 1977 reported that the alcoholic extract of the bark possessed anti-inflammatory and analgesic action, finding that validated the traditional use for arthritis pain. This action, which was recorded in the'80s by a group of Italian researchers that, in addition, maintained that this was partly related to triterpene isolated and antioxidants in the bark of the trunk.

In 1993, a Japanese research team has isolated a new group of alkaloids, which is probably due chuchuhuasi the effectiveness of treatments for arthritis and rheumatism. A U.S. pharmaceutical company, studying the antinfimmatorie and antirheumatic properties of this plant, has determined that these alkaloids can inhibit the production of protein kinase C
Other phyto-chemical factors acting against the Aldosa reductase (the enzyme involved in the damage of the nerve endings in diabetic patients) were discovered by a Spanish research group in 1998.

Finally, a test done by Italian researchers in the'70s and later reaffirmed in 1999 and 2000, documented the action of an extract chuchuhuasi against skin cancer.

Many other uses are documented in traditional medicine, where the bark of the plant has been used for centuries as a remedy. The name of the Peruvian plant, for example, means back trembling and refers to its traditional use for arthritis, rheumatism and back pain. The natives of Amazon: believe that the chuchuhuasi is an aphrodisiac and a tonic.
